M - Modesty
'You're so beautiful.'
'Oh my goodness you're kidding have you seen yourself?'
'Your hair looks great.'
'No, it's so frizzy I hate it.'
'You're so patient.'
'Hahahahahahha, I wish.'
Why can't we learn to accept a compliment. Why is modesty seen as the norm?
'You're so beautiful.' Why can't we just say thank you?
'Your hair looks great.' Why can't we agree?
'You're so patient.' Why don't we acknowledge that we are?
God created each and every one of us. We are amazing. We are his creation. So why do we deny the beauty, both internal and external, that he has given us? Our God took the time to make us, exactly as we are - why don't we appreciate this more?
I find it particularly strange on social media when people deny it. If you didn't like the way you looked, you wouldn't post it online would you? You're hardly going to post a photo you think you look horrible in - everybody uses social media to portray the best of them. If you spent 2 hours curling your hair, don't deny it looks nice! You know it does, that's why you did it! You didn't just spend all that time for the sake of it?
Now, of course you don't want to become big headed. I understand that.
But,
According to the Cambridge dictionary, modesty is:
‘the quality of not talking about or not trying to make people notice your abilities and achievements’
It doesn't say to DENY they exist, simply to not talk about them.
From 1 Timothy 2:9-10.
So your challenge this week,
Appreciate your beauty. Next time you look in the mirror, pick out a feature you like about your appearance.
Next time you help somebody, recognise what an amazing thing that is!
Next time you feel sad, notice how strong you are for carrying on.
You're amazing; learn to appreciate it.
That was M,
- An Alphabet of Thoughts.
